What is obesity?

How can you know if you are overweight? Your body mass index (BMI) will tell you whether or not you are obese. The BMI is the ratio of hones height and weight. It is a big indicator of ones fitness levels. So, how can you calculate your body mass index (BMI)? In order to make the calculation you first need to know your weight in kilogrammes and height in meters or weight in pounds and height in inches. The internet has several resurces and tools which help you calculate your BMI. The BMI calculators at some websites not only calculate your body mass index (BMI) but also categorize you as being underweight, correct weight or overweight. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute's website is one such site which you can visit to check your BMI. You can calculate your body mass index (BMI) yourself too. Just use the following formula:

BMI = Weight (kg)/ {Height}2 (m)

OR

[Weight (Ibs)/{Height}(inches)] *730

body mass index (BMI) in the 18-28 range is considered normal whereas anything above or below the limit is classified as underweight or overweight. If you are obese, you will be categorized into different slots as per your BMI:

Mild obesity: BMI more than 30
Morbid obesity: BMI more than 40
Malignant obesity: BMI more than 50

Malignant obesity is very dangerous and people who fall into this category are at high risk of heart attacks.

Another classification is as follows:

Class I obesity: BMI 30-34.9
Class II obesity: BMI 35-39.9
Class III obesity: BMI 40 or more

To cut a long story short, a body mass index (BMI) more than 30 is downright unhealthy and if you come in this category, it is high time you did something about it. Obesity can give rise to several health problems like diabetes, cardiovascular complications, renal complications, infertility, gallstones, gout, hypertension and so on. In women, obesity causes increased risk of cancer of the cervix, ovaries, breast and uterus and other complications like irregular menstrual cycles, osteoporosis, pregnancy problems and so on. In men, it results in an increased risk of cancer of the colon, rectum and prostrate. By now, one must be aware of the risks that obesity poses. However, don? lose heart because eating a healthy, well balanced diet and doing plenty of exercise can help you lose weight. Quit overeating and leading a sedentary lifestyle and go in for a well tailored diet plan and an active life. This way, your BMI will return to normal.
